classical variations workshop

classical variations workshop

APSD is excited to announce our Classical Variations Workshop on September 8-9 and 11, 2021. This two day workshop offers female dancers, age 10 & up (and in Grade II), daily technique classes, variation repertoire, variation character research and artistic coaching. Dancers will study multiple variations throughout the workshop to grow both technically and artistically. Dancers will be immersed in the details of classical ballet variations. The workshop will finish with a small parent showcase (COVID dependent) on Saturday, September 11, 2021. This is truly an excellent opportunity for those wishing to learn classical repertoire or prepare to successfully compete at ballet scholarship competitions.  All dancers attending the Classical Variations Workshop will have the opportunity to audition to attend Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) upon the completion of the workshop. Any dancers who would like to be considered for YAGP must attend this workshop.

Instructors will include APSD owner and director, Amber Michalik, as well as Sarah Boik Komara and Hannah Budny Carden.  Dancers should have several years of ballet experience, be at least 10 years old, and in Cecchetti Grade II.

THIS WORKSHOP REQUIRES TEACHER APPROVAL PRIOR TO REGISTRATION. PLEASE EMAIL INFO@ANNPARSLEYSCHOOLOFDANCE.COM FOR APPROVAL AND REGISTRATION PASSWORD.

YAGP AUDITION

All dancers attending the Classical Variations Workshop will have the opportunity to audition to attend Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) upon the completion of the workshop. Any dancers who would like to be considered for YAGP must attend this workshop.

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition that awards scholarships to leading dance schools worldwide. The competition is held annually around the world. APSD has attended YAGP for the past seven years, and we find it to be an excellent opportunity for serious students who hope to pursue a career or further training in the dance field. YAGP can be a time consuming and costly commitment, and we understand that it is not for everyone.  This is an optional portion of the workshop however, dancers who would like to be considered will be asked to indicate this prior to the showcase.

Students interested in auditioning will be adjudicated based on overall technique level and preparedness. Students will perform variations learned at the workshop and will be adjudicated by an outside judge. Please be aware that this is a very selective competition in that students come internationally to compete and the bar is set very high. Your child must be prepared to endure a stressful environment while maintaining the utmost commitment to their pieces and performance. The purpose of this event is not to have our dancers get an award or to receive any sort of special acknowledgement at this event. It is about the progress they make as dancers. While working to perfect their variation, they are also greatly improving their performance and technique. \

We prepare for YAGP beginning in September. Dancer will have 1-2 private or semi-private lessons per week with an APSD instructor. If you are chosen as a candidate, rehearsal availability may be a factor in whether or not you will be able to attend. If you are chosen as one of the YAGP candidates, you will need to register ASAP for the venue location as it will fill up. It is not up to the instructors to register your dancer. All dancers that are interested in attending need to be enrolled in, and have excellent attendance at APSD classes. We reserve the right to remove a candidate based on poor attendance or attitude.

We do not select the location of the semi-final until the fall. Location is usually selected based on the time of year that works best for our studio. In the past, we have attended Chicago, Tampa, Las Vegas, and Pittsburgh.

CCA CLASSICAL BALLET COMPETITION

Each year, the Cecchetti Council of America will holds an annual Classical Ballet Competition. The candidates that are selected from the workshop for YAGP will also be eligible to attend the CCA Classical Ballet Competition, should one take place. The competition planning for 2022 is not yet in the works and we have limited information available. We will keep the candidates updated as more information is available.
